The Will of Liberty

Book Three in the Liberty Trilogy

With two books written I don’t really have a choice but to complete and tie up the trilogy. All is set for a new and final adventure. The observant among you will have noticed the double-meaning of the first two books’ titles, providing a convenient ambiguity to dissect within the story. The Will of Liberty (a working title) follows this tradition. One side suggests the death of liberty, with reference to the traditional legacy/legal document, while the alternative meaning is the determination of liberty to survive. There is an interesting duality between liberty and oppression. Wherever the latter dominates, you will find the former hanging on, under the surface like a seed waiting for the right conditions to grow. And when the former dominates, you get exploitation from those keen to abuse those freedoms and get their own way at the expense of others. Neither is ever entirely victorious.

Progress Report

Ideas are floating around my brain. Chapter summaries have been written, while I play out scenes in my mind, thinking how I might flesh things out, develop characters and weave in the nuanced elements that give all my novels their allegorical flavour. Not only does the final book need to stand on its own, but it must bring together all those threads created by books one and two. I want something dramatic and fitting. The good news is I have plenty in mind, bringing the strands of Finbarl’s and Aminatra’s epic journey to a satisfactory conclusion. Getting the beginning right is also important: reintroducing our heroes with a dramatic flourish, and setting up the rest of the story. I’ve penned the prelude and that will instantly give the reader a sense of where this book is heading, and I’ve progressed a few chapters in (6K words).
